Places to Go

The eight communities of the Western Arctic each offer unique experiences for visitors, particularly because they are located in very different locations.

Fort McPherson

Travelling on the Dempster Highway from Dawson City, Yukon, the Gwich'in community of Fort McPherson is the first encountered - the oldest community in the region and final resting place of the RCMP Lost Patrol.

A further 60 km north on the Dempster Highway at the confluence of the historic Arctic Red River and the mighty Mackenzie River, sits the picturesque community of Tsiigehtchic.

Inuvik is the terminus of the Dempster Highway and the region's hub community with a full suite of services and lively activities.

To the west lies Aklavik, located on the edge of the Mackenzie Delta near the foothills of the Richardson Mountains. This was the original administrative headquarters of the region, and is accessible by boat or air in the summer, or ice road in the winter.

Soon to be joined to Inuvik by an all weather road to the Arctic, Tuktoyaktuk is the official end of the Trans Canada trail and home to hundreds of pingos.

To the east, Paulatuk is the gateway to Tuktut Nogait National Park, and a lively traditional Inuvialuit community.

Ulukhaktok is located on Victoria Island overlooking the Beaufort Sea. The community was once known as Holman, home to world-famous print-makers, a craft shop and endless tundra adventures.

Sachs Harbour

The Northwest Territories' most northerly community, Sachs Harbour, lies on Banks Island. Visitors can travel on the land for a muskox related adventure or a sport hunt. This is the home of thousands of muskoxen and the breeding area of millions of geese.

The Western Arctic is also home to seasonal communities and former communities which still have significant infrastructure.

Midway Lake

Midway Lake is located just south of Fort McPherson along the Dempster Highway - many dozens of seasonal cabins are located there. Midway hosts a lively music festival the first weekend of August, welcoming hundreds of residents from across the Mackenzie Delta and beyond. Visitors are welcome - bring your own camping gear.

Reindeer Station

Reindeer Station is located on the shore of the Mackenzie River north of Inuvik. This was once home to over 80 people, serving the first decades of reindeer herding in the region. Reindeer Station now hosts seasonal cultural activities and the occasional reindeer related event that welcomes visitors. It is accessible in summer by tour boat or in winter by an ice road.

Shingle Point and Herschel Island

Shingle Point and Herschel Island lie within the borders of Yukon Territory, but both are part of the Inuvialuit Final Agreement of the Western Arctic. Shingle Point is an historic gathering place each summer for the Inuvialuit, where families converge to relax, catch up, play traditional games, fish, and hunt.

Herschel Island once was home to up to 2000 people when it served the whaling industry in the late 1800s. Today, visitors can experience the history and view the remains of a few buildings, while exploring the unique ecology, wildlife, and birdlife of this rapidly eroding island.
