Winter Fun

Delta Ice Roads

From January to April, an ice road connects Aklavik to Inuvik in the Western Arctic. Visitors can rent a vehicle and drive the winding river and stream route to Aklavik. Speed limits on all ice roads are enforced for your safety - dangerous holes can open in the road if speeding traffic creates waves that cause the ice to fracture.

Dogsledding

Harness up a team of white huskies and take them for a run on groomed trails in Inuvik. Guided day trips and shorter half day trips are available. Longer dog team tours are also available. Check with tour operators listed here. Dogteam races are part of the fun at the annual Muskrat Jamboree in Inuvik.

Skiing

Inuvik was home to Canada's Firth twins, founding members of the Canadian Olympic Cross Country Ski Team, and participants in four Olympic Games. The tradition lives on at the Inuvik Ski Club where groomed and lighted trails offer visitors an Arctic workout.

Ice fishing

Guided ice fishing tours are offered in some Western Arctic communities. Your guide will take you by snow machine onto the Mackenzie River, nearby lakes or the Beaufort Sea, and show you how to jig for Arctic Char, Lake Trout or Inconnu - a member of the whitefish family. Share fish tales with your guide and a warm mug of tea while you concentrate on the fishing action.

Snowmobiling

Snowmobiles have largely replaced dog teams across the Western Arctic. Local guides offer winter snowmobile adventures from bases in several communities. Travel into the western mountains from Aklavik, or out onto the frozen Beaufort Sea, or inland to nearby lakes, and a comfortable camp, from Tuktoyaktuk. Snowmobiles are popular in Inuvik, as well, with guided tours available.

Aurora Watching

From September to April, and through the long winter days, there are splendid opportunities to view the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights, in Western Arctic communities. Our small northern communities offer the darkest of nights, and plenty of clear weather when the Aurora plays across the sky.
